Logline: In a world of perpetual night, where mankind has fallen into ruin and monstrous creatures roam in the night, two people find each other through light.

Pitch: In a world of perpetual night, Sam, a lantern maker, spends his days alone, scavenging for materials outside of the cement forest, dreaming of seeing one last sunrise, just like in times of old. He is watched from afar by a red eyed wolf. One day, after releasing a number of sky lanterns, across the forest, someone responds by setting off fireworks. Surprised, he releases more sky lanterns, and the fireworks operator responds in kind. Over the course of weeks, Sam and the mystery person building a relationship through light. One day, when Sam lights several lanterns, no one responds. Again, he is alone in the world. He decides to travel through the cement forest to the last launch point of the fireworks. After entering the forest, he is stalked by the red eyed wolf. Upon tripping, he damages his equipment, and the lights begin to go out. Backed into a corner, he is saved by a burst of light exploding across the sky. For the first time, he meets Olive, the firework maker. The two hide inside a building, combining their abilities to create a large enough light to escape.

Treatment: Sam travels from one desolate location to the next, only finding darkness and abandoned scrap. But Sam is comfortable in his solitude, working to create larger, brighter lanterns. One day, Sam finds out that he is not alone in the world. The steady lights of his lanterns match the daggered energy of the fireworks, and the two dance. When the fireworks ends, Sam finds that he is alone again. In order to find the fireworks maker, he gathers his courage and runs through the cement forest. He falls into a trap set by the red-eyed wolf, and his lights begin to glitch and falter.  With the darkness encroaching around him, and his light fading to a spark, he is saved by a burst of light exploding across the sky. For the first time, he meets Olive, the firework maker.

- Sam is scavenging for materials, making sure to never venture into the forest. He is watched by a red eyed wolf

Tone: Wonderful horror. I would like to establish a sense of beauty in a broken, dangerous world.

Genre: Adventure / Coming of Age / Science Fiction

This is foremost an adventure story. It’s about two character deciding to plunge into an unknown, perilous world, of which there is no return in pursuit of their shared goal.

Ex: “Made in Abyss”. In “Made in Abyss”, two characters explore an unfathomably deep, treacherous chasm, called the Abyss. Due to the Curse of the Abyss, the characters can descend, but never ascend, distilling this show to the purest essence of an adventure story; characters who risk everything for the sake of discovery on a journey with no return. I would like to construct an atmosphere that similarly balances wonder and horror

This is also a coming of age story. For the first time in his life, Sam is motivated to move from the relative safety of his lantern shop On the other hand, Olive is an overwhelmingly reckless character who tends to get in over her head. By combining the best of their characters, Sam and Olive become capable of achieving their dreams

Ex: “Gurren Lagann”. In “Gurren Lagann”, the two main characters have polar opposite personalities. One is an overwhelmingly confident hot head who barrels through life with flippant ease. The other is quiet and timid. Though my characters have different personalities, I would still like to replicate this sort of mutual relationship.
